One in four locals to be retired The percentage of Nelson’s “over 65” population is expected to double in less than 20 years, which means significant growth will be needed in housing, rest homes and the health sector, a forum of agencies which care for the elderly has heard. Bill Findlater of the Nelson Economic Development Agency, says that a study worked on by the EDA shows that by 2031 26 per cent of Nelsonians and 29 per cent of Tasman residents will be over 65. That compares with around 14 per cent
currently in each region. The stats were from a report that the EDA prepared last year and was delivered in front of 42 organisations that work in the aged-care sector. The forum was organised by Grey Power Nelson, and aimed to get each of the 63 agencies working together towards a strategic plan for dealing with the expected growth of elderly. Bill says the figures show a significant opportunity for Nelson businesses to cater for

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz the group. “People retiring now still want to live their life and stay active but they will most likely be looking at smaller accommodation, technology that makes their life easier and access to health services.” He says the medical workforce alone is set to grow by 50 to 75 per cent between now
and 2026 and that aged-care and health care demand is set to rise by 37 per cent. Grey Power president Neville Male says the forum was a success and believes that getting each agency working together will be of huge benefit for the region. “Every one of these organisations is doing good work in their own right, but there is very little linkage between them on how they can work together for the future good.”

The likely outcome of the forum would be a working group set up to develop a strategy, with the Primary Health Organisation, District Health Board, Age Concern and the Positive Aging Forum expected to take leading roles. Neville said Grey Power would continue its work with the strategy but would not lead it. “We’ll sit at the table but we don’t see ourselves as the leaders.” A “community hub” of services was a popular idea, says Neville, and would mean older people could go to the hub with all of their concerns and be pointed in the right direction from the one place. It would also mean the current organisations would work together more, passing information from one agency to another. Some of the major issues currently are the cost of living, limits on disposable income, health

issues, getting access to hospital services, issues around being isolated in the community, housing issues, cost of rental properties and the wood burner issue. The medical officer of health, Dr Ed Kiddle, last year said the aging population was the region’s top health concern. Gail Collingwood from the Nelson Tasman Positive Ageing Forum, was at the event and says it raised some good ideas, but there’s still a long way to go. “I think there’s always strength in working with others and I thought the break out section at the end, where particpants spoke about what they thought, was valuable. “But there are still some things I’m not clear about, like who will take ownership of the strategy. But I guess that will come clearer over time.” A draft strategy is expected to take several years to complete but work would start in the next few months, says Neville.

On the 20th anniversary of her father’s horrific death, Corina Tasker went to pay her respects at the same two spots she had done for the previous 19 years – her father’s grave and the spot marked with a small white cross where he drew his last breath. To her horror, the cross outside Tahunanui School was no longer there. In a panic she asked the school, neighbours and the council if they knew where it had gone. By the time she reached this newspaper office, wanting answers, Corina was in tears. Ross Tasker died in 1994 when a truck crashed into a car on Tahunanui Dr, which caused another truck to swerve with a third truck, driven by Ross, crashing into the second truck, killing him instantly. The driver of the car, Carolyn Cook, also died that day. The two crosses on the corner of Tahunanui Drive and Rawhiti St acted as a memorial to their deaths ever since. Being in such a high profile place, Corina says she saw the cross almost every week and,

It takes a long time to get over a death, especially when someone is taken so suddenly like that. Life’s not the same but it does get a little bit easier because we have things like those crosses there.” Corina says it seems cruel that it went missing exactly 20 years to the day he died and is still at a loss as to who would want to take it. She says if it was taken for some official reason she can’t track down which organisation may have taken it. If it was someone stealing it, then she is horrified. “It was a tough-

enough day anyway. When you think about the grandkids he didn’t see grow up and what a great granddad he would have been – because he was a great dad – it makes you upset. Then this happens, it ruined my day, I didn’t even get to his grave because I was too upset about this.” She says she will replace the cross but would like to know what happened to the original. “It’s cruel really. I just want them back there, even in the middle of the night, I don’t care, I just want them back and end of [story].” Nelson City Council, NZTA and Tahunanui School all say they didn’t move the crosses.

As expected, there will be no change this winter to the current clean air rules in Nelson city, which prevent many home owners from using their fireplaces. In front of a packed gallery, members of the council’s planning and regulatory committee, discussed the findings of a report into Nelson’s clean air policy. They decided to increase funding for
monitoring work being done, set up a working party to discuss the issue, including all stakeholders, a range of other initiatives. Supporters of the council relaxing the rules around wood burners say the move is a step in the right direction but some were upset at the speed of the process. Planning and regulatory committee chair
The Morepork Dart Club turns 60 years old this month and with the sport gaining in worldwide popularity its members say it’s a good time to be a member. The club started life in a garage in Tahunanui, then moved to another garage in Tasman St before buying its own clubrooms at Ben Cooper Park in Richmond. Its 28 members, ranging in age from 18 to 85, meet once a week and its oldest member, Joy Andrews, says it’s great fun. “I’ve never been one to enjoy the heat too much, so darts has been a great sport for me.” To celebrate the milestone, the club will host its rivals of 50 years, the Flyrite Dart Club from Christchurch on Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Stoke getting the ‘attention it deserves’ Stoke needs some attention, that much is clear. At the launch of a Nelson City Council survey about what residents think Stoke needs, there was no shortage of suggestions. Business owners and residents said parking, limited space for retail and poor access for elderly people were all major issues. Mayor Rachel Reese spoke to the residents and business owners about the need to give the suburb the “attention it deserves”, starting with the proposed community facility at Greenmeadows. “Around three-quarters of Nelson’s population growth, between now and 2045, is predicted to occur in Stoke,” she said. Deputy mayor Paul Matheson will be leading the charge on the survey and says there is no time to waste. “When you see the stats, we’re running out of time and we need some action.” The survey aims to give residents
an opportunity to have their say about the revitalisation of the suburb. On the Nelson Weekly Facebook page, people said lights down the railway reserve, more car parking and better facilities, like a stationary shop, would all be welcome. Another suggested a skate park and a drop-in centre for youth. Residents are encouraged to complete the online survey via the Nelson City Council website, using search phrase “Stoke Survey”. A hard copy can be collected from Stoke library. The survey will be open until Thursday 29 May. Everyone who completes it will go into the draw to win a $50 prezzy voucher. Two drop-in sessions are also being held at Stoke Memorial Hall on Monday 19 May, from 2pm to 4.30pm and 5pm to 7.30pm, when people can give their feedback in person to the project team.

Call for age limit on tattoos Nelson MP Nick Smith is calling on the Nelson City Council to introduce an age restriction on tattoos, after receiving a complaint from the parent of a 16 year-old who got her hands permanently inked. Nick was approached last week by a Nelson father, who was distressed to discover his daughter paid for, and received, permanent tattoos on both her hands after visiting The Jail House in Bridge St. The Jail House’s Facebook page says it only requires parental consent for boys and girls aged under 16 to get tattoos. “It got my back up more than a little bit, but
probably more so because there’s no bylaw in Nelson to prevent this happening,’’ says the father, who didn’t want to be named to protect the identity of his daughter. “I’m just one parent – how many other parents are going to have the same issue?’’ Auckland has introduced an age restriction through a bylaw and Nick says he’d like Nelson City Council to do likewise. "I don’t think young people under 18 have the maturity to make a life-long decision about permanent tattoos. I want there to be an age restriction so that customers aged under 18 have to have parental con-

sent before they can get a tattoo.” Nick has written to Nelson City Council, providing it with a copy of the Auckland bylaw and encouraging it to take a similar initiative. "I’ve had reports from colleagues in Auckland that the regulatory controls work well and there were fewer complaints from concerned parents since the age limit of 18 was introduced. The teenage years are difficult and young people may make decisions they later regret.” He says the law doesn’t allow people to marry or drink under the age of 18 without
parental consent. Our new driver licence system effectively restricts a person having a full licence until they’re 18. We should extend these 18 year restrictions to permanent tattoos. "I see this bylaw option as an immediate solution to address this issue in Nelson but I also think Parliament needs to legislate to require the parental consent for under 18 year olds nationwide. There won’t be sufficient time to address this prior to the election but I will be encouraging a colleague to advance a member’s bill to make such a change in the law.’’

Cake decorating used to be a dying art but now, thanks to the popularity of reality television food programmes like Ace of Cakes and Cupcake Wars, it’s slowly making a comeback. And that popularity was evident at the Nelson Cake Decorators and Sugar Artists Guild workshop at the Richmond Church of Christ on Saturday when about 30 enthusiastic amateurs spent the day learning some new tricks. “Cake decorating is quite a nerdy thing to do but we’ve been lucky because it’s been popularised by all the television shows,” president Maureen Grage says. “We have monthly meetings and after a conference last year we have picked up a few more members.” Although all their members are hobby decorators, Maureen says some of them “are very, very good”. She says three members, Rachel Sutton, Lois Diaper and Linda Bunt, have won lots of competitions and “they are as good as any of the professionals”. Maureen says it takes years of practise and learning to become proficient at cake decorating and even longer to become an expert.

Businesses behind ‘lungs for Dad’ Raising $100,000 may seem like an impossible task, but bit-by-bit the Corkill family are getting closer to “dad’s new lungs”. Since Nelson Weekly reported the plight of Mike and his family, the community has jumped in behind the family and already raised more than $6000, with plenty more fundraisers in the pipeline. Mike, his wife Julie-Ann, and their five children, have been selling raffle tickets and collecting money in Richmond Mall with huge success. From the mall campaign alone the family has raised more than $3000. Local businesses such as Colour Plus and Richmond Brake and Clutch, have
donated tins and a free warrant of fitness. Kevin Gear from Colour Plus says he decided to help after seeing the family’s story in the Weekly. “We need to get in behind and support him. It’s a sense of community, that’s what it is.” Brumbies on Hardy St, have offered to have a tin in their store and give a percentage of its muffin profits to the family. Waimea College will be having a mufti day next week with proceeds going to the cause and Mike’s eldest daughter Cassie is hosting a garage sale this Saturday. Mike says the response from the community has given him new vigour and he’s busy organising a quiz evening and auction for next month. “It’s been really nice and talking to people and the mall have been really great as well.” Mike needs to raise $100,000 for a lung transplant. If he doesn’t get the transplant, he’s been told he could be dead by the end of the year. His children have labelled the campaign: “Dad’s new lungs”. The airfield at Nelson Airport has been home to the Royal New Zealand Air Force for the past 10 days and on Saturday they opened it up to their neighbours. Around 100 personnel from Base Ohakea set up camp on the airfield last Monday as they deployed for Exercise Wiseowl. Children got the opportunity to try on the military gear, sit in the planes and explore some of the temporary facilities. “I think it’s fantastic,” says Nelson father Brent Maxwell. “It highlights what they do and shows you what sort of equipment they’ve got. We came out here today just to have a look and see what it’s all about. This helicopter flew over Nelson last night and I thought I’d quite like to have a look at it and see how big it is, it’s very impressive.” The Air Force will end its exercise and leave Nelson Thursday.

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz When someone tells you they’re planning to spend three months walking the length of the South Island – most of it by themselves – one of the first questions you have to ask is “why?” Zascha Mann, a former Nayland College student who recently graduated from the University of Otago, is set to undergo the 1360 km journey through the Te Araroa Trail in September, and he has a couple of reasons as to why he’s doing it – and no, it wasn’t inspired by the film “Into the Wild”. “I guess it starts way back in my childhood. My family used to always go on holidays to the Marlborough Sounds, Golden Bay and the Nelson Lakes, and we’d always do awesome outdoor activities like tramping and kayaking and pretty much everything outdoors,” he says. “It developed a real love for the outdoors and a real passion for adventure. “After high school I went on my O.E through Asia. I really got to see the affect pollution can have on the natural environment and it made me realize just how lucky we are in New Zealand. It’s a pretty beautiful country.” Zascha studied neuroscience in Dunedin for three years, and was hungry for another adventure when he graduated. “So I guess all of that stuff led to the idea of travelling New

Should the wood burner rules be relaxed? Some people can’t afford to heat their homes with electricity and we all know nothing heats your home like a wood fire does. Wood fires aren’t the issue, smoky chimneys, because of wet wood or insufficient combustion, and rubbish burning are the cause of poor air quality. Glen James Tomlinson.

'We just like helping people'
A Mother's Day High Tea at the Boathouse Cafe has helped raise about $1600 for the Alzheimer's Society of Nelson, but organisers say they need more funds to keep providing their services around the NelsonTasman region. One in three New Zealanders are affected by some form of dementia and it invariably has a big impact on their family and friends. Alzheimer's Society of Nelson receives Ministry of Health funding, but still needs an additional $80,000 to help cover the cost of employing three fieldworkers and provide a range services to support people afflicted by the disease, and their carers. One of the organisers of the High Tea, Aileen Rodley, says field workers Heather Lack-
ner, Sue Cochrane and Rose McDrury do a great job, giving practical and emotional support for the sufferers and their carers. They provide advocacy, education and support in the home or on the phone, informing people of the services they can access and liaise with related service agencies. They also hold monthly support groups and access day care for the sufferer so the carer has time to "do the everyday things that are difficult to get done when they are caring for their loved one". In addition, Sue, who is the full-time field worker for Nelson, looks after the Wanda Trax service which tracks sufferers who wander. Aileen says Alzheimer's Society of Nelson is fortunate to have a dedicated band of
about 40 volunteers to help out the field workers. Many of them have more than 20 years of service including Olive Jeffries who has been helping out for 25 years. "We do it because we like helping people and we know we make a difference," Olive says. "But it can be hard at times because you often get emotionally attached to the families you are helping." Alzheimer's Society of Nelson chairperson Jill McKnight, says they couldn't operate successfully without their volunteers. They also received great support from the community, including the Soroptimists of Waimea who did the catering at last week's fundraiser. Jill says anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can contact 546 7704.

When Jon Toogood was at high school he had one musical mentor, although his approach was somewhat unorthodox. “He just said he knew nothing about heavy metal, so he just sat outside and had a cigarette while we had a jam,” the lead singer from Shihad said, during a two-day visit to Waimea College. “That was my band mentor. He was in a band called the Holidaymakers. I’m so glad that’s what he did though. He used his near-20 years of experience as the front man of Shihad and The Adults, to conduct workshops on composition, performance, getting over nerves and how pop songs were arranged. His mentoring was a lot more professional than what he spoke of in his teenage years, but he did joke that “I just like stealing all of their ideas” after he had worked with a Year 10 band.
Next month police throughout the country will be opening up their doors and holding open days where the public can come and see what policing is really like. For Nelson Bays the open day will be held at the Nelson Police Station. People will be able to see a number of the displays we had at the First Responders parade and as well we lave some of the agencies we work really closely with there such as Victim Support. There will be opportunities to have a ride in a police car and see certain parts of the Police Station. You’ll be able to test your speed against the speed camera and get up close to some of our Armed Offenders Squad members. No doubt the most popular members of the squad - our canine companions - will be making an appearance as well. For us the open day is about getting to know our communities better and to send a message that we are approachable and willing to take the time to chat with you. We rely heavily on the positive relationship we have with our communities in Nelson Bays to be effective in the work we do. I can tell you from my time in other areas that not all Police areas have the benefit of the level of support we get from the people of Nelson. We’ll be putting more information out as we get closer to the date, but for now put Saturday 14 June in your diary and I hope to see you there.

Netball Reporter editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz The 2014 netball season got underway in glorious weather conditions. Players and officials alike are looking forward to playing in Saxton Stadium after last year it was damaged by the April flood. However the stadium was not available on Saturday as Netball Mainland were preparing the stadium for the Tactix and Pulse clash on Sunday evening. The weather was a blessing and there were a few complaints from the more seasoned players as the surface is not so kind on the body, however they know the stadium is there for the remainder of the season. Stoke Sun City Paint & Panel made every post a winning one when they picked up from last year’s championship title to record a resounding 46 – 11 win over Nelson College for Girls B. Stoke have retained all but one of their 2013 team and have been training well. The college team, on the other hand have had only one training together, so they were very much on the back foot. Stoke dominated in all facets of play and should they continue to play in a similar vein could see themselves in line for promotion into Premier 2. Stoke played great lines and an extremely effective through court defence which enabled several intercepts in the mid court. Goal keep Jess Hildyard,

Nelson College beat Blenheim club Central Pirates 4-2 on Saturday and should be drawn against Richmond Athletic in the second round of the country’s oldest football competition after they beat FC Nelson 3-0 on Sunday. The winner of the match will be the last Nelson side remaining in the countrywide knockout competition, meaning a road trip to Christchurch could be on the cards. A week in the life of Zoe Walker
While the Mainland Tactix were in town to play the Central Pulse in the ANZ Championship game at Saxton Stadium on Sunday night, Weekly netball reporter Carol Cook met up with the only local in the team. Despite rolling her ankle two days before the game, Zoe Walker still made the trip to her home town and took Carol through a week in the life of a professional netballer.

Lay Advocates in the Youth Court Background The Youth Court is part of the District Court and primarily deals with young people 14, 15 and 16 years old. The Court has its own special judges who are used to dealing with young people. The Youth Court is closed to the public, however media can attend with restrictions on reporting. The lay advocate is appointed by the Court to support a young person. They are responsible for ensuring that the Youth Court is made aware of all cultural matters that are relevant to the proceedings and representing the interests of the young person’s family or whanau to the extent that those interests are not otherwise represented in the Youth Court. The Registrar of each Court is responsible for the administration and organisation of these appointments. Role Responsibilities The primary responsibilities of a lay advocate are: • make sure the court understands any cultural matters to do with the case and provide the court with the cultural context of the young person; • assists and supports the provision of appropriate cultural advice and information to the Youth Court; • provides the court with the cultural context of the young person’s family; and • represent the interests of the child’s or young person’s family to the extent that those interests are not otherwise represented in the proceedings. A lay advocate needs to have a high level of relevant cultural knowledge and experience, as well as sufficient standing in the culture of the young person in respect of whom the appointment is to be made. Lay advocate appointments are made by the Youth Court on a case by case basis. Payment is for services rendered and is paid at an hourly rate by the Ministry of Justice.
